Taiwan-U.S. 2017 Green Industry Road Show to Tainan字體:小 中 大

On September 15, Tainan City Government’s Economic Development Bureau hosted the 2017 Green Industry Road Show to Tainan. In the morning, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Kin Moy led a delegation of U.S. green industry representatives to visit Acting Mayor Li Men-yen at Tainan City Hall, and to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation with Tainan City Government by AmCham Kaohsiung on behalf of the U.S. green industry delegation and AIT. This event is expected to open up opportunities for cooperation between American green energy industry firms and their counterparts in Tainan.

Acting Mayor Li remarked on the closeness of trade relations between the United States and Taiwan, noting that the U.S. was currently Taiwan’s second-biggest trade partner and third-biggest export market, while Taiwan was the United States’ tenth-biggest trade partner. He also remarked on AIT Director Moy’s special closeness to Tainan, as shown not only by his choice of Tainan as the first stop of a family trip to Taiwan, but also by his coming to the Uni-President Lions’ home stadium in Tainan to throw the first pitch of the regular baseball season in 2016 – the first time that the head of the U.S. representative office in Taiwan had come to throw the opening pitch at Tainan’s baseball stadium. It was clear to see the warmth of Director Moy’s feelings for Tainan and Taiwan, and the strength of the friendship between the U.S. and Taiwan.

The acting mayor went on to say that, in face of the increasing severity of global warming and the depletion of traditional energy sources, all of the world’s major countries were targeting energy conservation and carbon reduction as a main focus of government policy. He observed that Tainan enjoyed three particular advantages in green energy industry development, namely the advantages of “right time, right place, and right people.” It was the “right time” in that the central government was making an all-out effort to develop green energy, and would establish the R&D center for it at Shalun in Tainan. It was the “right place” in that Tainan possessed green energy industry clusters and an abundance of R&D power, with excellent foundations for the industry’s development at all points upstream, midstream and downstream. And it had the “right people” by virtue of its excellent business operating environment, its complete industry clusters, its pleasant living environment, and its rich industrial technology capabilities. Moreover, the city government had established a one-stop window to provide a full range of services for foreign investment in Tainan, and help raise the added value of investment. He hoped that, in the future, the city’s green energy related investment and industrial innovation R&D might attract American firms to join efforts aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, achieving a nuclear-free homeland by 2025, and accelerating green energy industry development.

The U.S. green industry delegation included representatives of internationally renowned engineering service firms AECOM, T. Y. Lin International, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Bechtel, and MWH Global; the world’s biggest medical diagnosis and test equipment maker Thermo Fisher Scientific; international product safety certifier UL; well known paint-making giant Benjamin Moore & Co.; fuel cell titan Bloom Energy; and holder of the patent for the Tribrid-Bioreactor, the world’s most efficient biogas power generation platform, PurposeEnergy.

The former director of Tainan’s Economic Development Bureau, Fang Chin-cheng, said that this year’s Road Show featured a round-table discussion between the U.S. green industry delegation and the city government, one-to-one talks on business opportunities, and a symposium on Shalun Green Energy Science City. He hoped such activities would in the future be able to promote further cooperation and exchanges between Taiwan and the U.S. in the domain of green industry and related infrastructure, while providing American companies with more lucrative business opportunities. He also hoped that, with Tainan set to be the focal point for green energy industry development, actively working hand-in-hand with the central government to build Shalun Green Energy Science City, it would be able to bring in technologies from firms overseas, and become a universal model for green energy learning. In the coming time, the city administration would continue to improve and perfect supporting measures peripheral to the Science City, utilizing smart grid, smart energy-saving and service systems, to make Tainan into an international green-energy smart city. Director Fang whole-heartedly welcomed U.S. firms to come to Tainan to participate in this singular growth, to till Tainan’s advantages to their full depth and co-cultivate the best possible crop of benefits from them.
