Located near the offshore area of Anping, the old well was drilled sometime during the reign of Ch’ing Dynasty Emperor Xianfeng (1851-1861). The water quality was quite good and plentiful and local residents often visited the well for water. However, convenient tap water pipes were built in Anping during the Japanese Colonial Period, and people became less and less dependent on wells for water. Residents living around the well started to incubate bean sprouts which turned out to be a rather profitable business. In fact, business was so good it earned the well the nickname “Bean Sprouts Well”. Today, the old well is quietly hidden in the south-east corner of Anping Old Fort. For safety reasons, a metal frame is set up around the well. But if you look close enough, you can still see the red brick inner walls of the well that was built during the Ch’ing Dynasty.
