Anping Old Fort (Grade 1 Historic Site)

Known as “Taiwan City” in the past, Anping Old Fort is the oldest castle in Taiwan. It served as an important administration building during the Dutch Colonization Period, the residence for three generations of the Koxinga’s family, and now has become a popular tourist attraction. After going through 300 years of transitions, this impressive historic castle is now listed as a Grade One National Monument.
Anping Old Fort offers a rich collection of artifacts on display in its exhibition rooms. Visitors can also climb up the lighthouse – the landmark of the fort – and take in the entire view of Anping District, Tainan City, or even the Taiwan Strait! Don’t miss the old city wall which has been standing for more than 300 years - it was built with simple materials such as glutinous rice mush, simple black syrup, and oyster shells. Under the platform on the north side of the castle, visitors will find an obvious circular base: is that the location of an old well? Or the remains of another structure? Up to now, scholars and experts have not yet reached a conclusion. The mysterious tunnel legend that has been floating around for 300 years in Tainan city is also waiting for you to come and investigate!
