Local Philanthropist’s Love for Hometown Reflected By Donations to Schools and Disadvantaged Students

Chen Lung-fei is a man of many hats; he’s part of the Executive Yuan’s Overseas Community Affairs Council as well as the chairperson of Kaohsiung City’s Model Father Association and the head of Duojia Company. Holding steadfast to the ideal of “draw and utilize from within your community”, Chen gave back to students and schools from his hometown. On the morning of April 10 (2018) in the auditorium located on the 2nd floor of Anding District Library, 114 children from Anding Junior High School, Anding Elementary, Nan-An Elementary, and Nansing Elementary each received a NT$6,000 scholarship and a small gift. Chen didn’t stop there; he also donated money to Anding District Office, Guanliao Village Office, and the four schools; NT$100,000 went towards emergency allowances for households going through hard times and another NT$100,000 was for school improvements. This act of generosity embodies the spirit of acting on compassion and giving back to one’s community.

Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung said that Mr. Chen was born in Anding District’s Guanliao Village and his father died early on in his childhood. Yet through perseverance and willpower he enjoyed a successful career abroad that lasted decades. He has now converted this hardworking spirit into his philanthropy work. His donations to schools and students show his heart still resides in his hometown, and his recent good deed exemplifies the spirit of “giving back to your community and helping your neighbors”.

Offices and schools that received donations and students who were given scholarship money weren’t the only people in attendance at this event, as a large group from the private and public sectors also accepted their invitations. Those in attendance included Tainan City Government, Kaohsiung City’s Model Father Association, the Republic of China’s National Furniture Association, Taiwan Plywood Manufacturers & Exporters Association, and Kaohsiung City’s Yungao Charity Association. During his speech, Mr. Chen encouraged the students in the audience to be passionate about learning and work towards their goals by emphasizing the Chinese concept of “the sea of learning has no horizon”, meaning learning is a lifelong activity. He also explained that success has a path if you’re willing to take it all the way down. The children reaped boundless knowledge from the event, which was effusing with a warm and touching atmosphere. Soapberry gift boxes containing the company’s finely made products served as souvenirs, and the purchasing of these gifts meant Anding’s economy and its local industry would benefit from this kind act of consumerism. After the event finished, participants headed to Shanhua District’s Xin Wan Xiang Restaurant, where a luncheon thanking educators capped off a perfect charity occasion.

District Chief Liu also expressed that Mr. Chen’s charitable actions reflect his attitude of giving back to his community, which is a truly admirable character trait. Chen’s donations aren’t just helping a large number of hard-working students from Anding District, as local schools will also have funds to carry out projects that’ll improve the quality of education they can deliver. The emergency allowances donation by Mr. Chen will help economically disadvantaged households that unexpectedly come across hard times or family members affected by accidents. All of these donations are palpable examples of the spirit of “draw and utilize from within your community”.
