Anding District Office’s Stairwell Art Gallery: Cai Rui-yuan Exhibition’s was Down-to-Earth yet Profoundly Deep

(Tainan City) Anding District Office’s stairwell art gallery invited Tainan’s very own grassroots painter Cai Rui-yuan to display 30 of his artworks, which depict farm village scenery, unadorned yet striking landscapes featuring mountains accompanied by water, and incredibly realistic-looking people and still life. The exhibition ran from April 7-May 26.
The connection between Anding District Office and Cai Rui-yuan goes back to the 2016 stairwell art gallery Origins, Clear, Display—Beginning, Understanding, Exhibiting, which was an exhibition that invited Cai along with painter Chen De-ming, an aborigine originally from Hualien, and local Tainan painter Xu Guo-zhan. Last year’s exhibition displayed 37 artworks, including oil paintings, traditional bamboo wickerwork, and paintings incorporating atypical materials and canvases.
Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung said that he felt very honored to have been able to invite Cai Rui-yuan to once again be part of this exhibition, as it promotes local art while providing the artists with a platform to showcase their work. Cai Rui-yuan’s exhibition was a fantastic example of this art gallery’s purpose, because, in addition to luring in more visitors than in the past, the district office hopes that in the future it will be able to invite even more local artists to display their art pieces in the gallery. All in all, this will help Anding District become a center of art.
Anding District Office Director Wang Yu-mian said that in the art world working class aesthetics are becoming increasingly more prevalent. Wang expressed her sincere gratitude to Cai for being able to convey beauty through a paintbrush, and that she hopes the local artist will continue to provide excellent painting tutelage for youth, which will help develop art aesthetics unique to Tainan.
This exhibition displayed a total of 30 oil paintings created by Cai, who has been painting for over 50 years. Displaying the past in a simple fashion while also communicating a sense of sincerity, Cai’s oil paintings contain a feeling of warmth that effuses from the well-blended colors. In short, his work turned the stairwell art gallery into a tunnel that takes viewers back in time to see the simplicity and emotions of old Tainan. Cai Rui-yuan’s exhibition was open to the public from April 7 to May 26, and it welcomed all art enthusiasts to come and see the artwork from Monday-Friday 8am-noon and 1pm-5pm.
