Follow-up Inspections Express Compassion: Anding Charity Group Repairs and Reinforces Homes Before Typhoon Hits

Super Typhoon Meranti was a vicious storm, which is why (Tainan City) Anding District Office’s Anding Charity Group carried out inspections on previously renovated homes in order to see how much of an improvement the renovation efforts would make once the typhoon hit Taiwan. Located in Zhongsha Village, the Lin family’s home was renovated in October 2015 in order to fix the leaking roof; recently, there was a period of heavy rains in Tainan and the house’s rear experienced roof leaks in a few spots. After carrying out an on-site inspection, the district office responded immediately by sending out members of the charity group, who arrived at the Lin’s house at 10am on September 13. The members fixed the areas in the back of the house that were leaking, and they also cleaned out the gutters, which were clogged with leaves and other objects. Overall, the group restored the house so that it once again can stand strong against high winds and heavy rains.

Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung said that Anding Charity Group had already done work on 15 households, spending over NT$ 1 million to do so. During this period, they not only have repaired homes, as they’ve also re-inspected and then fixed parts of previously renovated households so that these houses aren’t just improved once and then forgotten about. Re-inspecting already restored homes allows the charity group to see whether a family’s house also has other parts or problems that need to be addressed; of all its goals, the group places the most importance on the above aspect. Anding Charity Group’s most recent renovation and reinforcement effort has focused on making sure previous restoration work is holding up well, and they’ve done this work without taking any money for renovation costs. The purpose of these follow-up inspections is to show compassion to the families, as they won’t need to worry about roof leaks during heavy rains anymore due to the charity group’s immediate restoration efforts. Proving the group’s theme “Do a little more, show even more care” is all action, Anding Charity Group’s hard work ensures that the previously renovated houses will be much less likely to suffer past problems that still often occur after a home is fixed the first time.

Anding District Chief Liu also said that Anding Charity Group always stays true to its charity characteristics that are based on the principle of “Help the local community, develop the local community”, enabling the group to immediately and effectively help disadvantaged households whenever the moment comes. The fall season is known for its frequent typhoons, which pose very troublesome for the homes of underprivileged families as they often can’t withstand the inclement weather. Anding District Office hopes that Anding Charity Group’s immediate response efforts will result in the public feeling at ease as well as keep them safe during this year’s typhoon season.
