On the morning of August 21, 2016, in Tainan City’s Anding District, the new community space at Zhongsha Community’s Kué-á Park (lit. “Rice Noodles Park”) was unveiled by the following people: Tainan City Government’s Bureau of Civil Affairs Chief Secretary Chen Zhong-jie, Section Chief Chen Xin-hong, Section Chief Yang Ya-ling, Section Chief Chen Wen-qi, Tainan City Councilor Lin Zhi-zhan, Tainan City Councilor Liang Shun-fa’s assistant Wang Qing-qi, Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung, Zhongsha’s Village Chief, Zhongsha Community’s Chairman, and four substitute civilian servicemen. A large group of district chiefs, village chiefs, and community members were also in attendance in order to witness the first step of Anding District beginning to engage in community building.

The opening act of the event was an energetic spectacle performed by a local folk dance troupe from Xinji Community. During his speech, Chen Zhong-jie praised Zhongsha Community for its dedication to community building, and he also expressed his gratitude to the five land owners who set aside land for the community to use. Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung commended the four exemplary substitute civilian servicemen, who are Zheng Rong-jie, Li Xuan-wen, Zhang Yu-zhong, and Chen Jiong-yi, for their help in creating a new horizon for community building in Anding. Anding District Office relied on Zhongsha Community, the most active community in the district, and the highly skilled substitute civilian servicemen to create a site that displays Zhongsha’s defining features as well as turn a once unused space into a place that’s now pleasing to the eyes.

Anding District Office and Zhongsha Community expressed their sincere gratitude to the four substitute civilian servicemen for their hard work in helping Kué-á Park, and District Chief Liu and Zhongsha Community’s Chairman each presented the young men with souvenirs. In the midst of a warm and touching atmosphere, the four young men delivered stirring speeches about their experiences. Zhongsha Community residents cheered loudly throughout the event, which also featured entertaining performances by a group of kindergarten-aged children and elderly women part of the local senior citizens learning center. The event came to a fitting finish with Zhongsha Community’s “motherly figures” and four substitute civilian servicemen together performing the dance to the Chopstick Brothers’ hit song “Little Apple”; those in attendance will surely remember the beautiful memories made on this day.
