Anding District Office’s Substitute Civilian Servicemen Take Good Care of Disadvantaged Children at After School Summer Vacation Camp

Anding District Office held an after school summer vacation camp for disadvantaged children from July 18-29 (2016) at Anding District Senior Cultural and Entertainment Activity Center. A total of 12 children attended the camp, and substitute civilian servicemen were put in charge of taking care of the campers. The camp’s classes had a dual purpose of education and social welfare, and the goal was to make the underprivileged children able to enjoy a summer vacation full of important experiences.

The substitute civilian servicemen took care of the children every day from 9am-4pm. Working as instructors, they taught the children a variety of subjects every day, and eight of them served as tutors that helped the children with their summer homework. The classes featured activities such as painting self-portraits, making papier-mâché art, designing arts and crafts with creative thinking, and playing board games where intellect was key. As for more physical games, the kids’ hand-eye (and foot) coordination was put to the test during games of T-ball. Overall, it was clear to see that the camp allowed the children to have an unforgettable summer vacation.

Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung expressed that the district office’s substitute civilian servicemen are a fitting footnote for what social service is all about. The young men were able to share their own knowledge and skill sets as well as help the district’s disadvantaged children learn in a setting outside of school. The camp has also been a valuable experience for the men, as they’ll be able to take what they learned here and use it during the next step in their lives after they complete their service commitment.
