Reading Through a Sea of Books: Let Love Spread Far and Wide—Anding District Library Sends Their Love to a Remote Village

On March 27 (2016), Tsou Language Day was held in Ca’hamu Park, which is located in Tainan City’s Anping District. Anding District Library was involved in the event as well. The library donated 500 children’s books for different elementary school reading levels, and these books were sent to Chiayi County’s Dabang Elementary School (located in Alishan Township). Tainan City Deputy Mayor Yan Chun-zuo attended the emotionally touching book donation ceremony, during which Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung handed a few symbolic books over to Wan Shu-lian, the Principal of Dabang Elementary School.

Anding District Chief Liu Shih-Hsiung expressed that reading can open our minds to new ways of thinking and it also adds a lot of variety to our lives. In 2014, Anding District Library held Boxes of Cherished Books. The event sent books of varying elementary school reading levels to three elementary schools in the district as part of an effort to raise the quality and quantity of reading material for the district’s students. These recipient students expressed that they wished children in remote rural areas would also be able to have the same opportunity of reading these books. Every grade had already read and passed around these books, so in March the library started a book drive. Many book lovers wrote notes on cards that they placed in the books they donated, and these cards wished the recipients all the best. The library selected 500 children’s books from the books collected either during Boxes of Cherished Books or donated by a diverse group of kind-hearted souls. On March 27, the above books were given to Chiayi County’s Dabang Elementary School. Everyone involved in the event hopes that love along with the pleasant smell of books makes its way to remote areas.
