Datun Village

Features
Datun Village is the westernmost area of Xiaying District and was settled during the early Qing Dynasty. This area included a number of small hills, which were used as a marker to separate out the four areas. The Shen and Chen Clans first constructed pig farms upon these hills, giving rise to the name Jhuliaozai (pig hamlets). However, these places were latter renamed Shanliaozai (hilltop hamlets) to describe the local geography and provide a better sounding name. The hamlet was renamed a second time as Datunliao during the Japanese occupation. During district reorganization that took place after World War II, the village was renamed Datun Village after the hamlet of Datunliao. One can still see pig farms in this area that have long become part of the unique geography of this area and a testimony to the history of local economy. Bao An Gong is the local temple and serves as the seats of Princes Li, Chih, and Wu of a Thousand Years as well as Baosheng Dadi (High Emperor of Fertility) and Jhongtan Yuanshuai (Marshal Nezha of the Central Altar). The local villagers often referred to these gods as the Five Princes of a Thousand Years. Bao An Gong was first built in 1978 and served not only as a temple, but also as a community activity center. The district is also home to Datun Elementary School.
